Abstract

The goal of this project is to address the question of the possibility for production of acetate from hydrogen originating from electrolysis of water with surplus electricity from wind and solar energy combined with carbon dioxide from biogas upgrading. Previous research related to links between biogas production and wind/solar energy have been focusing on the conversion of hydrogen to methane. In this project we aim instead for acetate, which can be stored and later used for biogas production. This is a novel route where more research is needed for fundamental understanding of involved organisms and pathways as well as the use of suitable bioreactors The project is linked to the Swedish national biogas competence center, administered by Linköping University, and with SLU as a second academic partner. Within this center researchers, branch and industrial partners have joint discussions and the project have been identified as important by both research and industrial partners. The project will explore enrichment capacity of acetogens in the biogas reactors and will also explore construction and operation of trickle bed reactors using acetogenic organisms.
