Abstract

Magnetism is one of the most fascinating phenomena in physics, and humanity has studied magnetic materials for thousands of years. Altermagnets form a novel class of magnetic materials, only discovered around 2022. They are characterised by magnetic polarisation of the electronic bands without an overall net magnetic moment. Their unique electromagnetic properties make them suitable for spintronics applications, for example due to their ability to produce spin-polarised currents. This project aims to identify new altermagnetic materials with both good physical properties and a sustainable composition, using high-throughput electronic-structure calculations that determine whether materials are altermagnetic and classify their performance. Databases of known magnetic materials serve as the starting point. In the previous granting period we developed and applied a high-throughput framework that quantifies the altermagnetic band splitting, screened a large set of candidates starting from the MAGNDATA database, published the results in Physical Review Materials, and released a public database of ranked candidates (altermagnets.anyterial.se). The new granting period will extend the search to wider classes of materials. For altermagnetic performance we consider the magnitude of the band splitting, electronic properties such as the band gap, and the likely cost and toxicity of the constituent elements.
