Social stratification has traditionally been studied through economic outcomes like income and wealth. Sweden has seen rising income inequality alongside increasing residential segregation, but how this is reflected in the structure of social networks themselves remains unexplored. Individuals are embedded in networks of family, household, school, neighbor, and work ties, which together constitute a social opportunity structure, and population-scale networks offer a way to bring these ties into view at once. We use the Stratification Assortativity (StA) metric to conduct a comparative study on stratification in Sweden across cities, years, and social ties. Moving beyond the standard social science approach of partitioning income into quantiles, we apply a heuristic (MaxStrat) that accounts for network structure to identify the partition maximizing stratification assortativity.
