Abstract

Pharmaceuticals and their transformation products (TPs) are increasingly detected in aquatic environments due to incomplete removal in conventional wastewater treatment plants. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are gaining recognition as sustainable, low-energy alternatives for micropollutant attenuation, particularly in decentralized settings. However, empirical data on the performance of CWs in Nordic climates remain scarce, especially regarding the fate of a broad spectrum of pharmaceuticals, TPs, and influencing environmental factors. This project investigates the removal of >300 pharmaceuticals and TPs in a full-scale municipal wetland (Ekeby CW, Eskilstuna, Sweden), combining high-resolution mass spectrometry, microbial community profiling, and hydrological monitoring. We will assess the influence of macrophyte composition, microbial diversity, temperature, and light availability on removal efficiency through field measurements and laboratory experiments, including photochamber simulations. In addition, the project evaluates the potential of sludge-derived biochar to enhance removal via sorption and synergistic effects with biologically active substrates. Findings will inform evidence-based design and management strategies for CWs under current and future climate conditions and support compliance with the updated EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive. The project also aims to bridge scientific and practical perspectives through close collaboration with a municipal utility and will serve as a foundation for a broader research platform on nature-based solutions for contaminant removal.
