Access to crop genetic resources are central in order to develop new crop varieties suitable for making agriculture more sustainable and adapted to the changing climate. Such resources can be found both in unimproved landrace crops, but also in crop wild relatives (CWR).
In this project we will analyse landrace crop DNA obtained from historical seed collections and DNA from Nordic populations of CWR. We will determine within- and among-population genetic diversity as well as its genomic and geographic distribution. The aim is to within landrace crops detect genetic diversity associated with adaptation to climate and extreme weather and to within CWR identify populations of high interest for in situ and ex situ conservation.
