Abstract

This project aims to lay the groundwork for developing an efficient and inexpensive monitoring system that assesses the risk of stroke by fusing noninvasive measurements from the body surface. The measurements are obtained by means of high-frequency ballistocardiographic (BCG) sensors recently developed by Omsyn. These sensors can be embedded in suitable surfaces, such as mattresses or stretchers, and inconspicuously measure mechanical movement of the heart in lying patients without interfering with their comfort. BCG showed potential to reliably measure heart contractility and track cardiac output changes. The project will develop and evaluate algorithms to process and analyze BCG signals in order to relate them to stroke-related risk factors.
