Hypertension is common with a prevalence of approximately 1/3 in the adult Swedish population. Hypertension is the main risk factor to develop heart failure. Heart failure includes different phenotypes. In one of the main heart failure phenotypes, hypertension is very common, and is present in up to 85% of the patients. This type of heart failure is common among the elderly and is more frequent in women. Cardiovascular diseases are todya considered as inflammatory disorders with a strong involvement of various immune-related factors, but it is not clear whether these inflammatory components are active already before disease onset.
We are conducting a study where we explore underlying mechanisms in the development of heart failure. We aim to study gene expression and epigenetic regulation of genes that are relevant for inflammatory processes that could be of relevance in the disease initiation and process. Further, heart failure comes in different phenotypes, and we are also interested in mechanisms that might be involved in the development of these different phenotypes.
