Abstract

Gardens are poetic, enchanted places. In this project, I take interest in the histories, myths, memories and practices that permeates gardens in a time of accelerating climate change and environmental degradation. With a theoretical framework of socio-ecological memory, and ecological nostalgia, the aim of the study is to shed light on how gardeners, through their practices, understand and interpretate a changing nature through the past and, correspondingly, how the past is interpretated through a changing nature. This will contribute to new insights regarding shifting relations to places and pasts, and how the intertwined histories of nature, people and society are negotiated in times of vast socioecological changes. The overarching question guiding my project is: How do gardeners use and relate to the past in and through their gardens? Following this I also seek to know: (i) What aspects of the past, what histories, both in terms of a personal and a more distant past, does this entail? (And what is left out?) (ii) How are these histories negotiated and invoked with references to experiences of expectations of climate change and environmental devastation? To investigate this, I conduct textual analysis of non-fiction garden literature and interviews with gardeners in Sweden. The doctoral thesis is to be defended at the end of 2027.
