Abstract

The HumanIC network unites leading European academic institutions with hospital and healthcare HVAC industry partners to train a new generation of engineers and scientists in human-centric indoor climate design for healthcare environments. By integrating advanced computational modeling with user-centered visualization tools, the project aims to transform how indoor air quality and thermal comfort are understood, communicated, and optimized. The KTH team will contribute high-fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to analyze airflow, contaminant transport, and human interactions within sensitive indoor settings. Furthermore, Virtual and Extended Reality (VR/XR) technologies will be employed to translate complex simulation data into intuitive, interactive experiences for non-expert stakeholders. This approach is particularly critical in environments with vulnerable populations—such as hospitals, elderly care units, and elementary schools—where air movement and occupant behavior can significantly impact health outcomes and well-being.
