Abstract

This project will investigate metagenomic data from various biogas reactors utilizing different substrates, ranging from food waste to wastewater to syngas. The goal is to explore the microbial communities and understand who are the key players that perform in those conditions. Several methods will be employed, 16S rRNA analysis and whole genome metagenomics. One group that is of interest is acetogens, who key players in anaerobic digestion of organic material in biogas processes. To identify acetogens, formyltetrahydrofolate synthetase and acetyl-CoA synthetase/carbon monoxide dehydrogenase will be used as functional markers for the acetogenic community. Once potential acetogens are located, potential metabolic pathways will be extrapolated and investigated to determine other potential capabilities of acetogens within the biogas system. In addition, the genomes of known acetogens will also be analysed to reconfirm their classification as acetogens. The definition for acetogens has been misused and mislabelled in the current list of acetogens.
