Abstract

The ViEWS project started up in January 2017, originally with funding from the European Research Council's Advanced Grant scheme, now from the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond as part of the Societies at Risk project. ViEWS has developed, and continues to develop, a state-of-the-art machine-learning platform which is now (since December 2024) able to run and ensemble over models of arbitrary form (e.g. time-shifted regression, LLMs, temporospatial neural nets) to forecast global conflict at national and subnational levels. Monthly updated ViEWS forecasts have been made publicly available in raw form since June 2018 at https://viewsforecasting.org/resources/#downloads. In addition, we have recently launched an interactive dashboard at https://data.viewsforecasting.org. We continue to expand the machine-learning models used in the project as well as the algorithms developed to evaluate performance of such a system. In particular, our sub-national models currently only cover Africa and the Middle East, but we are committed to expanding these to global coverage over the course of 2025.
