Abstract

In this project, I am investigating the microbial communities in coastal sediments that have been subject to pollution from pulp- and paper industry. 16SrRNA amplicon sequencing is used in order to get in depth information on if and/or how the microbial communities varies with depth, and with distance from the source of pollution. I will use bioinformatic tools available (e.g. trimmomatic, spades, bwa...) to assemble and annotate sequences. The results will be combined with chemical analysis of the sediment samples (e.g. carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, methyl-mercury), thus linking microbial communities and (potential) functions to sediment geochemistry. Results will ultimately be published in peer-reviewed journals.
