Sweden, like Europe, is today dependent on imported soy to meet the needs of vegetable protein, which is largely used for feed. Our vision is to meet Sweden's need for protein-based food and feed products by increasing locally grown production of high-quality protein crops.
Field bean (Vicia faba) is one of the legumes that has a high protein content and is already grown in Sweden today, but only on a maximum of three percent of the arable land in some regions and the harvest is used almost exclusively for fodder.
Within this project we will use targeted DNA sequencing and other SNP data to produce genomic prediction models to improve faba bean breeding methods. These models combine genetic, phenotypic and environmental data to predict the performance of new breeding material based on genome-wide genetic markers.
