Current Project: Pathways to care
Background: The burden of mental health problems is significant and increasing among young adults at university. Studies report that many students do not seek or receive treatment for their problems due to various attitudinal and practical barriers. Research focusing on further in-depth understanding of students' perspectives on their choices around mental health management and help-seeking decisions is warranted. Objective: This qualitative study aims to explore pathways to care that students pursue for mental health problems, focusing on factors that facilitate or create barriers to treatment. Methods: We conduct semi-structured interviews with students focused on i) how students proceed from recognizing they have a mental health problem, ii) what they do or do not do to address their problems and why, and iii) their perception of received mental health treatment appraisal and how it affects future help-seeking. Interviews are conducted one-on-one (interviewer; respondent) in Swedish and are recorded using audio (m4a format). Interviews are transcribed into Swedish and English. A qualitative thematic analytical method is used to interpret the data.
