Abstract

Ocean surface waves are attenuated with distance as they propagate through ice cover in the marginal ice zone. However, most coupled climate models still treat polar packed ice as land, and assume it totally blocks the wave energy transportation. An increasing number of laboratory experiments and observations found such simplification is not valid, and may lead to large uncertainty in climate prediction for polar regions. Therefore, it is necessary to implement the wave attenuation process in numerical models, and improve the parameterization of the wave attenuation coefficient. This project uses in-situ data from buoys collected over Barents Sea, and studies the wave attenuation in the marginal ice zone.
