Abstract

Electrification of transport sector has a strong momentum with rapidly growing quantity of Electric Vehicles (EV) being transported in marine vehicle carriers between the continents and near the coasts. This project aims to ensure a safe transportation of battery driven vehicles in cargo spaces of marine vehicle carriers. Specifically, this project will perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations using an open-source CFD code OpenFOAM. Battery thermal runaway fire scenarios will be simulated and compared with small- and large-scale experiments. The effect of carbon dioxide extinguishment will be studied using the numerical tool OpenFOAM in combination with a multi-physics software for battery thermal propagation, and real-scale experiments.
