In this project we will investigate the medieval pilgrims´ ancestry and their infectious diseases using an interdisciplinary multi-proxy suit of bioarchaeological tools. We will utilize an archaeogenomic approach to study human remains from necropolises along the Way of St. James. There is an special interest in studying their ancestry as there is a debate on the date when the mixture between Christians and Muslims was produced. The individuals date from the X-XII century, a time when there should have between admixture between the two groups.
Beyond the ancestry we also want to investigate the microbes and diseases that might have affected these individuals.
