The attention given to bacteria's role in global cycles, such as carbon, sulfur, and methane, has increased as more data and evidence have been collected on their fundamental role in the consumption and production of these compounds. In this study, sediment samples were collected from two locations in Sweden: Kristineberg Bay and Koljö Fjord. The samples were subjected to RNA extraction and sequencing to obtain 36 metatranscriptomic samples. The samples were divided in a vertical profile and in triplicate, ranging from zero to 32 centimeters. The objective of this project is to understand how biological processes by microbes are connected with the production of compounds such as sulfur, carbon, and methane in these two locations within the sediments. Taxonomic profiles will be obtain using 16S rRNA genes, and functional annotation of the transcripts will be performed. This study is scheduled to be conducted between June 2024 and June 2025.
