Abstract

This project, a PhD thesis, seeks to understand what it means when street art becomes commercial advertising. Through ethnographic, visual and interview-based fieldwork in London, the development of the hand-painted advertising industry in London will be investigated to understand how urban surfaces are exploited for rent, how this economy of painting walls operates, and what the development of this unregulated industry means for the places in which hand-painted advertising is flourishing.
