Abstract

This project aims to explore the role of women in Early Bronze Age communities (2300-1600 BC) through interdisciplinary analyses of materials from the Mierzanowice culture in south-eastern Poland. The investigation will involve a comprehensive study of a selected Mierzanowice culture cemetery (comprising 60 individuals) and an analysis of 40 additional representatives from various sites in the same region. The interdisciplinary approach will include archaeogenetic and isotopic studies. This area, which serves as a gateway to Central Europe, has historically been traversed by numerous groups with intentions ranging from plunder to settlement. The project intends to test hypotheses concerning the role of women in these communities, specifically whether, compared to males, females exhibit greater genetic diversity and different genetic affinities in both mtDNA and nuclear DNA.
