In this project the environmental genomics group at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment, led by Prof. Stefan Bertilsson, will perform demanding analyses of large metagenomic datasets from lakes, wetlands and other aquatic biomes. To uncover the unknown diversity of these habitats, analyze the population genetics of its microbial inhabitants and map the role of the microflora in key biogeochemical processes, we will do large coassemblies from temporal metagenome data (sometimes hundreds of samples), bin assembled reads into genomes and then annotate and compare the assembled genomes to global databases. The project will serve several projects from the Swedish Research Council and Formas.
