The project is a one-year Master's thesis of Alma Hodzic whom I am co-supervising that will investigate the biogeography, species delimitation, genetic structure and effects of environmental changes on populations in the New Guinean bird genus Melipotes. Melipotes is a mountainous species spread across the entire island of New Guinea with a disconnected distribution across separate mountain ranges. The project investigates the processes that facilitated this observed distribution. Preliminary results suggest that the genus is more structured than is currently described phylogenetically. The dataset consists of 36 samples from museum collections whose genomes have already been re-sequenced.
