An increased cultivation of legumes is required for the protein shift to a higher fraction of plant proteins in our diet. It will also contribute to food security and sustainable future food production. This will require access to suitable varieties of legume crops for specific geographical regions and varying climates. Our proposed project aims to determine the genetic circuits critical for the induction of flowering and plant architecture in the protein crop faba bean (Vicia faba), which are traits tightly linked to seed yield and, therefore, of high importance for agricultural output. These genetic circuits will be revealed by detailed genetic analyses of meristems and leaves. Our work will identify differentially expressed genes that can yield improved faba bean varieties for wider cultivation of faba bean in Sweden with an increased array of uses for food products.
The objective of the project is to:
I. Investigate gene expression patterns in shoot apex (meristems) and leaf of late and early genotypes at different developmental stages (Vegetative and reproductive).
