Abstract

Stockholm University is one of the partners in the European project BioLUSH. The project BioLUSH has the main objective of developing new textile and crops that can be grown sustainable in Europe driving plant-based solutions for a circular bioeconomy. We are currently working to re-establish the stinging nettle, an ancient plant crop used for food and textile fibres, as a “21st century crop” using modern genetic to understand its genetic and improve its agronomical properties for biomass and fibre production. Genomic sequences of the stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) are available publicy in the Darwing Tree of Life website and our purpose is to assemble our own draft of the genome using those publicy available sequences.
