Anaerobic digestion is a sustainable technology that generates nutritious digestate, which can be used to recycle nitrogen and phosphorus to agriculture, reducing its climate impact. However, digestate may also contain undesired contaminants, such as antimicrobial resistant bacteria or their genes, but the extent of this problem has not been fully elucidated, particularly when it comes to understanding the effects of substrate and operational conditions. In this study we therefore collected 58 samples from various sampling loations in different biogas plants across Northern Europe in order to investigate the diversity and spread of antimicrobial resistance in these systems. Metagenome sequencing was performed on the extracted DNA.
