Abstract

African history in terms of lifeways and health is immensely diverse and interesting. We will be investigating the health and life ways of African individuals that lived in the past through the analysis of their dental calculus. Dental calculus is calcified dental plaque that encapsulates DNA, proteins, and other biomolecules related to diet and health. By performing genomic sequencing and analysing the proteins within the dental calculus, we hope to shine light on health factors such as past infections and pandemics. Moreover, it can give us an indication of the diet of the people who lived in the past. We have already generated both genetic data, as well as protein data and are planning to investigate these aspects related to health, diet and lifestyles using the computing hours in this project.
