Abstract

Unlike mammals, Salamanders have an extraordinary capacity for regeneration of whole body parts following injury or amputation. My research focuses on deciphering the molecular mechanisms behind regeneration of the Salamander limb. Previous small RNA-seq identified an up-regulation of embryonic stem cell specific miRNAs following limb amputation and these miRNAs are also significantly expanded in the Salamander genome. To better understand direct and indirect regulatory targets of these small-RNA molecules in limb regeneration, data will be analyzed from both bulk RNA-seq and targeted pull-down RNA-seq. Uncovering specific pathways regulating Salamander limb regeneration may allow us to exploit these mechanisms to promote mammalian regeneration in future.
