Abstract

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS) are neurodegenerative disease in which different regions and cells in the central nervous system (CNS) show vulnerability to pathology. The overall goal of this project to devise novel immunomodulatory therapeutic approaches for treating neurodegenerative diseases. We harness the specific immunoregulatory properties of amniotic epithelial cells (AECs) – a type of stem cell derived from human placenta - to modulate the activity of immune cells in the CNS that will reduce disease progression in above-mentioned diseases. With state-of-the-art technologies like single cell sequencing, develop an effective protocol for regeneration of the diseased CNS through cellular transplantation. This project would be done in KI's vice president, Robert Harris' lab with support of the department of clinical neuroscience in Karolinska Institutet.
