Abstract

We develop and use the LUMIA regional atmospheric inversion system, which aims at producing observation-informed estimates of greenhouse gas emission in Europe, using observations such as provided by e.g., the ICOS network. The LUMIA system relies internally on atmospheric transport models (TM5 and FLEXPART), which require large amount of input data, and in the case of FLEXPART also produce large amount of output data, which need to be stored as they are computationally heavy to produce but don't need to be present entirely and at all times on the HPC (the data are typically only accessed a few times per year). LUMIA was initially developed for CO2, but has now been extended to CH4, radiocarbon (14CO2), and the modelling of Black Carbon aerosols (BC) is also being implemented.
