Abstract

Some data suggest that plants respond differently to background herbivory compared to outbreak herbivory. Minor shifts in background insect herbivory caused by human activities, therefore, may have profound but poorly understood consequences for forest structure and function. This project aims to test if identical levels of total herbivory rate can causes differences in ecosystem carbon uptake and storage if the damage is incurred over different temporal frequencies.
