Abstract

Metagenomics on microbial communities in different conservation agricultural treatments. We performed shotgun metagenomics sequencing on 94 samples taken from a 25-year old field experiment on conservation agricultural treatments in Flakkbjerg, Denmark (associated with Aarhus University). In the field experiment, different treatments (tillage, straw removal, crop rotation) are evaluated for their influence on a.o. physical soil parameters, greenhouse gas emission, and crop plant root development. So far, no evaluation of microbial community diversity has been performed. The aim of this project is to investigate the composition and abundance of both fungal and bacterial diversity, investigate presence of genes involved in carbon and nitrogen cycling and how they differ between the treatments, and assemble MAGs (Metagenome assembled genomes). This will allow new insights on how the treatments are reflected in the abundance and diversity of microbial communities, how conservation agricultural practices influences microbial diversity and microbial processes present, and what genes are associated with desirable soil traits such as carbon and nitrogen storage.
