Abstract

This storage proposal is for the storage needs of the Katju laboratory regarding past, current and future requirements for our ongoing studies on the genomes of both experimentally evolved C. elegans populations and natural isolates. The genome of C. elegans is approximately 100 megabases with 50X being the expected coverage of Illumina sequences samples and 30X for Pacbio Samples. We will require storage for an existing 257 Genomes of Illumina WGS and 180 RNA-Seq samples for active/ongoing projects. In addition to going projects, we are currently awaiting the return of an additional 265 WGS samples and 24 RNA-Seq samples which were submitted for sequencing at Texas A&M University shortly before our translocation to Uppsala University. Furthermore, we are expecting to add another 100 Pacbio samples as well as 160 Illumina WGS samples within the next 6 months. The expected raw storage for each Illumina sequenced run is roughly 3.8GB/sample and we expect a standard 4X increase in storage for alignment and analysis. As we plan to utilize both hash and index-based mapping on all WGS datasets the estimated storage required for analysis were doubled to account for multiple mapping methods. These calculations yield approximate storage requirements of ~30 TB within the year, however an approximate storage of ~15TB is an imminent requirement.
