Abstract

The aim of this project is to investigate the expression of genes involved in olfactory signalling in the important agricultural pest tomato leafminer (Tuta absoluta). RNA-Seq data will be available from tissues associated with sensory mechanisms in the moth in order to undertake de novo assembly and subsequent analyses of gene expression from male and female conspecifics. We intend to target and annotate novel pheromone biosynthesis genes differentially expressed in the sexes and tissues, which will serve as a platform for further functional studies and complimenting existing research. This project furthers the development of genomic resources for this important agricultural pest in addition to addressing important questions regarding the evolution of pheromone divergence in moths. It also forms an important component of the PhD thesis of a student within the group.
