The desert plant jojoba can accumulate wax esters in their seeds instead of oil. Wax esters are esters between a fatty acid and a fatty alcohol and are of interest for the chemical industry, but knowledge about the synthesis as well as how jojoba can make use of wax esters in the germinating process are sparse. The project aims for using transcriptomics of germinating seeds to try to elucidate the pathways of degradation of wax esters. The obtained knowledge of wax ester degradation in jojoba will be used to improve future transgene wax ester lines of different plant species.
