Abstract

Mosquitoes, globally notorious disease vectors transmitting protozoa, malarial parasites such as Plasmodium spp, about 229 million cases estimated, causing 409 000 death per year (WHO-2019). Mosquito feeding behaviour and host preference and its influence on vector competency and its epidemiology is poorly understood. The preference for hosts, be they cattle or human, probably depends, at least in part, on the genetic underpinnings of olfactory system of the mosquito. In this study, we aim to identify potential markers associated with mosquitoes that have chosen a human and calf in a pervious behavioural assay. Analysing the mosquito whole genome sequences will hopefully identify markers (e.g. variants) associated with the host preference of mosquitoes towards cattle and human.
