Abstract

Many industries need to convert to sustainable product development while adhering to requirements on functionality and cost. Within a wide range of applications such as hygiene products, packaging, pharmaceuticals, wound care, cellulose products, and foods, liquid and molecular transport is important for functionality. The three-dimensional material structure acts as a matrix in which molecules are transported, e.g. for drug release or liquid absorption in hygiene products. The materials often contain water, are soft and heterogeneous, and structures on several length scales interact to give the materials their properties. This makes both simulations and experiments challenging. In this project, players from industry, trade associations, research institutes and academia develop and implement a new concept for material development. It is based on understanding the relationship between material structure and transport, imaging of material structures, in silico design of structures, as well as computations and measurements of molecular transport. By creating digital tools and a concept that industrial partners can use to understand the function of existing materials, they can streamline the design process of new materials with optimal properties based on sustainable raw materials. The concept will be offered to actors outside the consortium after the end of the project. The multidisciplinary approach and the competence from the VINN Excellence Centre SuMo Biomaterials and CDI step 2 give us good possibilities to meet this challenge.
