Abstract

This is a continued project on previous research. Cardiomyopathy is a group of heart diseases affecting the heart muscle, where primary forms of these diseases is recognized with a genetic predisposition in both humans and cats. The diseases may cause a shorter lifespan due to sudden, unexpected, death. In humans it is treated with heart transplant, but in animals such as cats health programs selecting against the diseases are of interest, were a genetic variant can facilitate the breeding strategies should a test be developed for it and used in the selection. This project aim at finding genetic variants associated with hypertrophic and restrictive cardiomyopathy in two cats breeds, Maine Coon cats and Sacred Birman cats, respectively.
