Abstract

The Vasaloppet cohort includes information on all Vasaloppet skiers between 1989 and 2009. For each participant (with a Swedish personal identification number) and year of participation, an age, sex, and county matched non-participant was selected from the general population (total n approximately 775,000). The Vasaloppet administration registered race information (distance, finishing status and time). Individuals were linked with the Patient register and to the Longitudinal Integration Database for Health Insurance and Labor Market Studies (LISA). In addition, Vasaloppet participant status was linked with the cohort studies Swedish Mammography Cohort (SMC) and Cohort of Swedish Men (COSM), both part of the infrastructure (SIMPLER; total n at baseline=107,339). These cohort includes additional information from questionnaires and clinical examinations. The main outcome of interest is fractures and other orthopaedic conditions.
