This project combines genomic, metagenomics and metabolic research and aims to better understand the pathophysiology of diabetes and find new therapies. We aim to investigate how the interaction between genetic risk variants for diabetes and gut microbiota affects glucose control in individuals with pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes and MODY(Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young) . The interaction between genetic risk variants for diabetes and gut microbiota has not previously been extensively studied and the project therefore aims to open up a new avenue of diabetes research. A particular interest is on the ADRA2A risk variant for type 2 diabetes (Rosengren et al., Science 2010).
