This project is continuation of project 2021/5-257. The resources applied for in this proposal will be used, if granted, to model the impact of shipping emissions both on a larger European scale and urban scale as a part of the SCIPPER (Shipping Contributions to Inland Pollution Push for the Enforcement of Regulations) project and Evaluation, control and Mitigation of the EnviRonmental impacts of shippinG Emissions (EMERGE) project.
SCIPPER implements available and innovative techniques for monitoring the compliance of individual ships to existing sulphur and future NOx and PM air pollution regulations. Measurements are also used to develop relevant emission factors, required by emissions inventories and Air Quality (AQ) simulation models. AQ models are being enhanced to simulate secondary aerosol formation as the emission plume ages in the atmosphere. Using these advanced simulation tools, SCIPPER will quantify the environmental and health impacts of varying degrees of regulatory compliance for selected test cases. The overall objective of SCIPPER is to provide authorities with: (i) fundamental technical information in developing their enforcement approaches and (ii) modelling tools and monitoring techniques in order to quantify the environmental benefits of successful enforcement. Objectives of the air quality modelling performed by IVL in SCIPPER is:
− Participate in ensemble modelling of coastal areas in the North and Baltic Seas and the Mediterranean with several models (CMAQ, EMEP, CHIMERE, CAMx, LOTOS-Euros, MEMO) to demonstrate and discuss model specificities.
− Model test cases and use corresponding scenarios developed in the project.
− Perform quality control and estimate uncertainty through model inter-comparison.
− Check modelling results with observed data (EMEP, AIRBASE) including observed concentrations from the project
− Study effects of shipping emissions in selected harbour regions (Gothenburg) at high resolution (1-km grid size or higher resolution) with u-EMEP model.
− Include revised plume ageing module.
− Couple harbour/city scale model with regional scale modelling.
The objectives of EMERGE are (i) to quantify and evaluate the effects of potential emission reduction solutions for shipping in Europe for several scenarios, and (ii) to develop effective strategies and measures to reduce the environmental impacts of shipping. EMERGE is developing an integrated modelling framework to assess the combined impacts of shipping emissions on the aquatic and atmospheric environments, and the effects on marine ecosystems. The assessment will include the benefits and costs of control and mitigation options affecting water quality, air pollution exposure, health impact, climate forcing and bioaccumulation of pollutants. Objectives of the air quality modelling performed by IVL in EMERGE is:
− Study effects of shipping emissions in Öresund regions at high resolution (1-km grid size) with u-EMEP model.
− Model corresponding scenarios developed in the project.
− Check modelling results with observed data (EMEP, AIRBASE)
